Nollywood actress and entrepreneur, Iyabo Ojo, has incurred the wrath of the Lagos state government by not paying her tax.
The state government has consequently slammed her ₦18 million tax bill.
In her reaction, the actress declared her readiness to face the consequences. She insisted that she has no money to pay.
Ojo also questioned the formula which the government used in arriving at the said figures.
Directing her anger towards Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s government, she lamented of the lack of transparency in the calculation process.
The mother of two also lamented that she benefitted nothing from the government and as such, she is the one responsible for making things work for herself.
According to her, the government contributed zero value to her, declaring that she raised her kids alone without support from the government.
This is not the first time Ojo has publicly voiced her grievances regarding taxation in Lagos state.
Recall that in 2019, she shared tax papers on Instagram, lamenting the excessive taxation that was jeopardising her business.
The actress who remains resolute in her stance not to pay the Lagos state government has however been criticised by some Nigerians.
According to Richard Akinnola, a lawyer and social critic, Ojo has no reason to cry foul. Akinnola recalled that the actress recently claimed that the dress she wore to the African Magic viewers’ awards night cost N37.5 million.
He wondered why someone who can buy such an expensive dress is finding it difficult to pay N18 million.
He consequently urged the actress to pay or negotiate a downward review with the Lagos state internal revenue.
Akinnola said this is the main reason why people should not lie in the name of social status.
‘See why it’s not good to be lying just to show you are a big girl. I hope all those emergency skit makers claiming they bought houses and array of SUVs in one day would learn from this showmanship’, Akinnola added.
