The Federal Government has approved the release of 15 prisoners from Malumfashi Satellite Custody Centre in Katsina state.
The Controller General of the custodial centre, Mr Haliru Nababa said that the release was ordered by the Minister of Interior Dr Olabinmi Tunji-Ojo.
The CG represented by the controller of Corrections Katsina State, Mr Abdulmumin-Haruna, explained that the inmates released were those whose offences were minimal.
In a statement, he expressed gratitude to the honourable minister for the order of their release alongside making them regain freedom again.
“This is the first of its kind in the country and will go a long way in reducing overcrowding in custodial centres.
“This will consequently improve service delivery at the custodial centres in line with international best practice,” he stated.
Nababa also called on the remaining inmates who were left behind not to feel bad, as it is not the end of the world for them.
He said: “You should instead see it as an opportunity to turn a new leaf and obey the rules and regulations of the custodial centre,”
