The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adopt electronic voting and install Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in all polling units across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The demand was articulated by the ADP’s National Chairman, Engr. Yabagi Sani, during the party’s non-elective national convention in Abuja over the weekend.
Sani emphasized the necessity for INEC to enhance its electoral processes by introducing technology to ensure transparency and efficiency.
He stated, “It is our great expectation that by 2027, voters should be able to make their choice with a press of the button when INEC would have introduced electronic voting and installed CCTV cameras in our polling units.”
Engr. Sani also criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies, suggesting that they have not served the interests of the Nigerian people.
He urged the President to either retool the policies or consider a complete reversal.
Sani highlighted several issues with the current administration’s strategies, stating, “One concrete advice we needed to give here is that the government should swallow its pride and reverse those policies that are not working.
“In the alternative, such unworkable policies should be retooled, re-planned, and brought back.”
Sani pointed out the inefficacy of current palliative measures, likening them to ineffective subsidy payments on petrol or diesel.
He advocated for the operationalization of Nigerian refineries, asserting that they “should work and must be humming.”
Addressing broader systemic issues, Sani attributed Nigeria’s challenges to factors like corruption, policy inconsistency, ethnic divisions, and reliance on oil.
He criticized the ruling parties over the past 23 years, including both PDP and APC, for failing to deliver meaningful improvements to the lives of Nigerians.
He concluded with a call to action for the government and all stakeholders to work collectively towards rectifying these issues and putting Nigeria back on track.
He also emphasized the importance of implementing effective and sustainable policies for the nation’s development.
In a related development, Rt. Rev. Babatunde Adeyemi, the Bishop of the Diocese of Anglican Communion, Cathedral Church of St. Thomas, Badagry, has called on President Tinubu to ensure thorough research before implementing economic policies.
Addressing the second session of the Seventh Synod of the Diocese of Badagry on Saturday, Bishop Adeyemi expressed concerns over the current economic policies, describing them as tough.
“He should watch those who are working with him and then put things in proper perspective. The President should also not forget the restructuring of the country, each region to develop at its own pace,” he said.
