Egypt kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group B campaign with a dramatic 2–1 victory over Zimbabwe on Monday night, thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah.
Zimbabwe took an early lead in the 20th minute through Prince Dube and maintained pressure throughout the first half. Egypt equalised in the 64th minute when Omar Marmoush found the net, setting up a tense finish.
The game appeared destined for a draw until Salah controlled a pass, pivoted, and fired a precise left-footed shot past Zimbabwe goalkeeper Washington Arubi in added time, sealing all three points for the Pharaohs.
The win reinforces Egypt’s status as one of the favourites to lift the trophy, giving them momentum as the tournament progresses.
Earlier on Monday, South Africa secured a 2–1 victory over Angola in another Group B opener, setting up a highly anticipated clash with Egypt in Agadir on Friday. Angola will face Zimbabwe in Marrakesh in their next fixture.
Meanwhile, in Group A, Mali and Zambia played out a 1–1 draw, while tournament hosts Morocco opened AFCON 2025 on Sunday with a 2–0 win over Comoros.
With Group B now underway, the early results highlight a competitive start, as favourites and underdogs alike look to gain crucial points.
