Alejandro Papu’ Gomez, Argentina’s World Cup winner, has been penalized with a two-year ban following a failed drug test.
The 30-year-old football striker, who won the Mundial December last year after a penalty shoot-out with his French Opponents in the finals, took his kids’ sickness syrup during the run-up to the competitions.
Alejandro Gomez tested positive for a banned substance a few hours before the commencement of the World Cup in November last year.
He claimed to have taken the drug without consulting Sevilla’s health personnel after a bad night’s rest. However, this explanation was not enough for a ban not to be imposed.
Alejandro Gomez must now choose whether to file an appeal to the given verdict, requesting to have the ban overturned or possibly reduced.
Gomez joined Serie A side Monza on a free transfer in October 2021, after Sevilla terminated his contract. He spent two years, and six months at the Football club, winning the Europa League in his last season.
Gomez spent four years at the club in Atalanta between 2014 and 2021, making 252 appearances and scoring 59 goals. He helped them to the first-ever Champions League appearance in the club’s history.
The World Cup winner together with his manager left the Italian FC in early 2021, after falling out.
