The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it will be left with no option but to embark on a nationwide strike following the federal government’s delay in implementing the 2025 agreement, news.ng reports.
At a press conference held at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) branch on Monday, the union expressed deep concern over the continued delay despite the January 14, 2026, unveiling of the ASUU vision and values.
The union also frowned at the slow pace of implementation by state universities.
“ASUU is concerned about the implementation generated from the January 14, 2026, jamboree for the unveiling of the ASUU vision and values, which is expected to facilitate the implementation of the agreement and guide its strategic actualisation.
“Consequently, the implementation by the state universities, the union has observed with great concern the delay in the payment of the various aspects of the salary component, pattern, earned academic allowances to the mainstream, the professorial allowance, and the responsibility, and the respective state government have failed to provide immediate funds.
“Sadly, some state governments remain idle,” the union stated in part.
Part of the 2025 FG/ASUU agreement includes a salary increase, which features a pay rise for academic staff.
A key item in the agreement is the union’s demand for improved pensions for professors, which would be equivalent to their annual salary upon retirement at the age of 70.
Also included are the duty-based Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), professorial allowances, and the Consolidated Academic Staff Tool Allowance (CASTA).
On research funding, the union is seeking dedicated allocations for libraries, laboratories, and research projects to be handled by the National Research Council.
Lastly, the union is demanding institutional autonomy and academic freedom.
