Atalanta head coach Ivan Juric has leapt to the defence of Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman following criticism over his failed move to Inter Milan this summer.
The 26-year-old was strongly linked with a transfer to the Serie A champions, but the deal collapsed late in negotiations, sparking backlash from fans who accused him of being ungrateful to Atalanta.
Speaking after Atalanta’s weekend fixture, Juric suggested that Lookman was not entirely at fault for the saga that saw him fail to secure a move to Serie A rivals Inter Milan.
Juric claimed that he and the gifted winger had a productive conversation last week over his botched move, but that it is now crucial for Lookman to get into good physical form.
“He (Lookman) spoke to me and the team on Monday; he was surrounded by people who had given him some bad advice,” he was quoted by Tuttomercatoweb.com.
“He has a great winning mentality, and now we need to get him back in shape physically.”
The Croatian tactician emphasised that the forward remains an important part of his plans and urged supporters to rally behind him. “He is committed to Atalanta. These things happen in football. What matters is that he continues to give his best for the team.”
Lookman, who played a key role in Atalanta’s Europa League triumph last season, has started the new campaign under scrutiny but remains a fan favourite for many who admire his skill and determination.
