Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman has come under fire from sections of the club’s supporters after his highly anticipated move to Inter Milan collapsed in the final days of the transfer window.
The Nigerian international, who was reportedly keen on a switch to the Serie A champions, was left disappointed after negotiations between the two clubs failed to reach an agreement.
According to Italian media, Inter was unwilling to meet Atalanta’s valuation, forcing the deal to fall through.
While Lookman remains an Atalanta player, many of the club’s fans have expressed anger at what they perceive as a lack of loyalty from the 26-year-old.
Supporters on social media accused him of being “ungrateful” for attempting to engineer a move away just a year after playing a pivotal role in Atalanta’s Coppa Italia triumph and their strong European campaign.
One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Lookman owes his career revival to Atalanta. Wanting to leave so soon is nothing short of betrayal.” Another added, “If he doesn’t want to be here, let him sit on the bench. Nobody is bigger than the club.”
The return of Lookman to the first-team squad, however, has not been well received by some Atalanta fan bases.
The words “No. 11 reintegrated, but for us, you remain ungrateful” were put on a banner in Bergamo.
