Few days after promising to hand over to an individual from the southeastern part of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar says he would support Governor Nyesom Wike for president in 2027.
Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has continued to face the challenge of uniting warring groups within the party.
Recall that after the presidential primary, Governor Wike fell out with the party national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, whom he accused of corruption and manipulation of the delegate list for Atiku.
Wike, who is demanding Ayu’s resignation, has continued to meet with presidential candidates of other parties while addressing the media on confidential issues within the PDP.
In a bid to reach a truce, Atiku has promised not to seek reelection if he wins the 2023 presidential election.
Sources at the meeting which took place at the Rivers State Governor’s lodge in Abuja say Atiku declared that he would support Wike’s presidential bid in 2027.
But Wike was not excited about Atiku’s offer.
“Atiku offered to support Wike in 2027 if he gives necessary support to him in the ongoing campaign,” a highly placed source told TheNation.
“The governor wasn’t excited about the 2027 poll prospect because he [Atiku] made the Igbo a similar offer in Enugu a few days ago.
The source added that “this crisis would not have reached this level if Atiku had kept faith with the London talks and unwritten agreement with Wike.”
