Bayern Munich have ruled out the possibility of re-signing the 35-year-old defender. Boateng, a free agent, has been training with the club this week amid speculation that he could return amid injury concerns in the defence. However, the club said on Friday that they would not be offering Boateng a new deal.
“The situation has improved,” Bayern said, “with the return of the two centre-backs, Dayo Upamecano, and the recovery of the injured Matthijs De Ligt. Following current circumstances , we have Opt not to re-sign Boateng to the club.”
Boateng, who was born in Berlin, has spent the past decade at the club, playing 363 times and winning nine times in the Bundesliga and two Champions Leagues (2013 and 2020). He was also a part of Germany’s World Cup-winning squad in 2014.
This week, the football club came under many criticism for reviewing bringing Boateng back, as the player is presently facing a court case for a domestic violence act.
On Wednesday, the highest court in Bavaria dismissed the case and ordered a retrial on the basis of the same facts. Boateng was fined EUR 1.8 million last month for offences dating back to 2018. On appeal, the fine was reduced to EUR 1.2 million last month.
On Friday, Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed that his side had suffered a “severe case of central defence”, adding that the decision “does not only have sporting implications”.
