Super Eagles defender Benjamin Fredrick has returned to England after Belgian side FCV Dender confirmed he has suffered a knee injury that will keep him out for several weeks, according to Soccernet.ng.

The club announced the setback across their official platforms, noting that the 20-year-old has already begun rehabilitation with his parent club, Brentford. The timing of the injury is a major blow for both club and country.

Fredrick has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the past year, establishing himself as a trusted member of Nigeria’s defence under head coach Eric Chelle. His absence now leaves a significant gap as the Super Eagles prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Providing an update on seven sidelined players, FCV Dender stated, “Benjamin has suffered a knee injury. He is now beginning his rehabilitation in England at Brentford.”

The injury report also included updates on Naïl Sebtaoui, Kobe Cools, Michael Verrips, Ragnar Oratmangoen, Moïse Sahi Dion, and Luc De Fougerolles.

Nigeria Forced Into Defensive Reshuffle

Fredrick’s absence comes at a difficult time for Nigeria. Since making his debut at the Unity Cup, the youngster has started six consecutive matches for the national team, impressing at both centre-back and right-back.

His standout performances came during the CAF World Cup playoffs in Morocco, where he was named Man of the Match in the semifinal victory over Gabon before delivering another dominant display in the final against DR Congo. His partnership with Calvin Bassey had quickly become Nigeria’s most reliable centre-back pairing.

But with the knee injury expected to sideline him well into 2026, Chelle must now reconsider his defensive options. Semi Ajayi is set to partner Bassey, while William Troost-Ekong—who lost his starting role to Fredrick—provides experienced depth.

Chelle may also explore fresh call-ups, including Chidozie Awaziem of Nantes or Emmanuel Fernandez of Rangers, who recently committed his international future to Nigeria.

Fredrick’s injury deprives the Super Eagles not only of a rapidly improving defender but also of a player whose maturity and composure had significantly grown in recent months.

For the Brentford youngster, the focus now shifts to recovery—with hopes of returning stronger for club duties and reclaiming his place in Nigeria’s squad for their 2026 campaigns.
