To address the rising security concerns stemming from the influx of armed herders and invaders, the Benue State Security Council has issued a stern ultimatum.
The council, which convened at the EXCO Secretariat Government House in Makurdi, emphasized the need for armed herders and invaders to leave Benue State promptly or face arrests and prosecution.
The resolution was communicated through a communique issued after the Security Council meeting on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.
The gathering was part of the ongoing efforts by the Benue State Government to restore lasting peace in the region, particularly in communities affected by the presence of armed herders.
Following thorough deliberations, the Security Council arrived at critical resolutions aimed at promoting peace and security within the state:
Open Grazing Prohibition: The Security Council affirmed that the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law 2017 (Anti Open Grazing Law) remains in force.
Immediate Departure: Armed herders and invaders were given an ultimatum to leave Benue State immediately.
Warning to Hosts: Individuals inviting armed herders and invaders were warned to cease such actions immediately.
Ultimatum for Open Grazing: Those engaged in open grazing within the state were given a two-week ultimatum, effective from February 21, 2024, to cease such activities.
To enforce the ultimatum effectively, the Security Council established a seven-man committee. The committee was tasked with working towards ensuring compliance with the given ultimatums.
Security agencies, traditional rulers, and the public were urged to collaborate in identifying and prosecuting individuals collaborating or inviting armed herders into the state.
The council also called on the general public to remain calm and vigilant while assuring them that the State Government is taking comprehensive measures to ensure the adequate security of lives and property in Benue State.
Furthermore, the Security Council reviewed the prevailing hardships and potential food insecurity in the nation.
It urged the people of Benue State to stay calm, assuring them that efforts are underway to alleviate the situation.
