Biden's Administration to Host Global AI Safety Summit in San Francisco

On Wednesday, the Biden administration announced it will host a worldwide safety forum with an AI focus.

The International Network of AI Safety Institutes will have its inaugural meeting in San Francisco on November 20–21, with co-hosts Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

Australia, Canada, the United States, Britain, France, Japan, Kenya, South Korea, Singapore, and the European Union are among the members of the network.

Both excitement and anxiety have been sparked by generative AI, which can produce text, images, and videos in answer to open-ended questions.

It has the potential to overtake humans and have disastrous consequences, as well as to render some jobs obsolete and sway elections.

“With AI evolving at a rapid pace, we… are pulling every lever,” Raimondo said in a statement.

“That includes close, thoughtful coordination with our allies and like-minded partners,” she said.

Newsng gathered that the International Network of AI Safety Institutes will hold its inaugural meeting in San Francisco.

The institute was officially established in May with the goals of putting inclusion, innovation, and safety in AI first.

The purpose of the next gathering is to initiate technical cooperation in advance of the AI Action Summit, which is scheduled for February 2025 in Paris.

It will comprise technical specialists from the corresponding government-based scientific agency or AI safety institute for each member.

As stated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the institute was established to “enable a future in which we realise AI’s full potential to benefit humanity and the planet” and is “crucial” to “encourage innovation in this transformative technology while mitigating its risks.”

We earlier reported that China had persuaded a conference of 50 African nations in Beijing to accept more of its goods before Western export restrictions on electric vehicles and solar panels take effect, in exchange for additional loan and investment guarantees.
