In a shocking incident from Maharashtra’s Thane district, 19 members of the same family have been accused of running a cryptocurrency scam, duping two brothers out of more than $119,000.
The victims were lured into the scheme with promises of huge returns, with the fraudsters claiming they could multiply their money twelvefold.
The brothers, swayed by the prospect of quick profits, invested substantial amounts. From March 2022, they poured $109,000 and $30,600 into the scam, believing their trust in the family would pay off.
However, when the promised returns never materialized, the victims grew suspicious. The situation escalated when one of the brothers, a 42-year-old, reported the case to the police after receiving threats.
The accused allegedly warned the brothers they had connections with influential figures, adding to the victims’ fears.
Several members of the accused family have been identified, including Sabir Yakub Ghachi (50), Shakir Yakub Ghachi (45), and Ruhiha Shakir Ghachi (39).
So far, no arrests have been made, but the case has been registered under India’s Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (in Financial Establishments) Act, 1999.
