Nigeria’s Home Eagles have been challenged to improve their performance by the coach of the team, Emmanuel Chelle, if they want to go to the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarterfinals.
Tuesday night’s first game at Amman Stadium in Zanzibar saw Chelle’s team lose 1-0 to the defending champions, Senegal. Senegal won with a goal from Christian Kobi fifteen minutes from the end.
Despite occasional displays of excellence, the Home Eagles’ overall performance has been patchy and below the tournament’s standards, Chelle said in an exclusive interview following the team’s lacklustre group-stage showing.
“They have the potential, but potential alone doesn’t win matches,” Chelle said. “The team must sharpen their attack, tighten their defence, and show more urgency in transition. At this stage, there’s no room for complacency if they want to progress.”
After a dismal loss to Senegal in their opening game, the Home Eagles, who were drawn in a competitive group that included two former CHAN winners, are presently outside the qualifying spots.
Chelle emphasised that the team’s greatest shortcomings to date have been poor finishing and short attention spans, emphasising that the technical staff has to fix these problems before their last group match.
“The players must believe they can win, but belief must be backed with discipline, teamwork, and execution,” he added. “If they can raise their game, the quarter-finals are still within reach.”
