Chelsea have confirmed that midfielder Facundo Buonanotte has been added to their UEFA Champions League squad following the long-term injury sustained by youngster Dario Essugo.
Essugo, who had impressed in training and was seen as one of the Blues’ brightest prospects, suffered a serious setback that will rule him out for an extended period. UEFA regulations allow clubs to make injury replacements in their registered squads, paving the way for Buonanotte’s inclusion.
Buonanotte, the 20-year-old Argentine attacking midfielder, joined Chelsea F.C. from Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. and has been gradually integrated into the first-team setup. Known for his creativity, close control, and vision, he is expected to provide depth in midfield and attacking areas as the Blues navigate a demanding European campaign.
A club statement confirmed the decision: “Following the injury to Dario Essugo, Facundo Buonanotte has been registered in our Champions League squad. We wish Dario a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing Facundo contribute to our European journey.”
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca welcomed the addition, saying Buonanotte’s flair and versatility will give the squad valuable options. With tough fixtures ahead in both the group stage and domestic competitions, his presence could prove crucial.
For Buonanotte, the registration represents a major opportunity to showcase his talent on Europe’s biggest stage and stake a claim for more minutes in a Chelsea side looking to re-establish itself among the continent’s elite.
