Gabon head coach Thierry Mouyouma has admitted that his side fell short in quality after a 4–1 defeat to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs semi-final on Thursday night in Rabat.

The Panthers pushed Nigeria early but were undone by a dominant second-half and extra-time display from the three-time African champions at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex.

Jerome Akor fired Nigeria ahead, but Mario Lemina equalised just before full-time to force extra minutes. Gabon’s resistance, however, collapsed soon after, with substitute Chidera Ejuke restoring Nigeria’s lead before Victor Osimhen struck twice to seal a commanding victory.

Speaking after the game, Mouyouma did not hide his frustration, admitting his side was far from the level required to win against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

“We were not good enough. We were not sharp enough in the offensive box, and we didn’t defend well in our defensive box. Nigeria did both and scored,” Mouyouma said after the game.

“The match was decided on fine margins. The scoreline doesn’t show how well we competed against one of the most dangerous attacking sides in Africa.”

He hailed his players’ efforts but stressed that improvement is essential if Gabon hopes to compete at the highest level.

“The boys fought, but it wasn’t enough. We must grow, work harder, and be better in key moments. Nigeria punished our mistakes and deserved their victory,” he added.

The defeat ends Gabon’s hopes of reaching the World Cup, while Nigeria advances to the playoff final with renewed confidence after a commanding performance.
