As the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State approaches, residents and political observers are increasingly concerned about the communication challenges of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
Despite his high-profile candidacy, Senator Okpebholo has avoided engaging with the media and has been notably absent from public forums where he could address voter concerns directly.
The deliberate media silence has fueled speculation and unease among residents who are questioning his readiness to lead.
Rumours circulating in Edo State suggest that the APC candidate may struggle with effective communication, particularly in English, which has further heightened concerns about his capability to represent the state’s diverse interests.
The concerns are compounded by the lack of clarity on his policy positions and vision for Edo State, as well as his limited interaction with the electorate.
Observers have pointed out that the candidate’s avoidance of media interactions raises doubts about his preparedness for public office and his ability to articulate his plans and policies clearly.
One of such observers in the state, Barr Evelyn Edomwansan, said: ”Honestly, this situation has led to growing apprehension among voters who seek transparency and engagement from those vying for leadership positions.
”Many residents have expressed frustration over the apparent disconnect between the candidate and the electorate, questioning how a leader who is unable or unwilling to communicate effectively can address the pressing issues facing Edo State.
”The absence of clear, direct communication from Senator Okpebholo contrasts sharply with the more accessible and visible campaigns of his rivals who have been everywhere campaigning and selling their manifestoes to the people.”
She urged the APC candidate to address the concerns promptly by engaging more openly with the media and public, demonstrating his communication skills, and clarifying his policy agenda.
”As the election draws nearer, the ability of Senator Okpebholo to connect with voters and convey his vision for Edo State will be crucial in determining his electoral success,” she concluded.
