The Court of Justice in Lagos has pronounced a sentence of death for Lagos State Police Officer Drambi VANDI (ASP) on the charge of murder. On Jan. 16, 2023, Mr. VANDI had been arraigned on a count of murder, and the court granted him an expedited hearing.
The court found VANDI guilty of the crime of shooting and killing the lawyer, Mrs Bolanle RAHEEM (DAMBII VANDI), on Christmas Day, 2022.
The State Government had alleged that VANDI shot Mrs Raheem (Drambi VANDI) in the chest while she was returning from church to her home on the Lekki Expressway in Lagos, according to the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.
The prosecution team, headed by former Attorney General and Attorney-General for Justice, Mr Moyosore ONIGbanjo ( SAN), called 11 witnesses including 8 police officers to the stand. The prosecution wound up its case on February 25.
On February 28, the accused through his lawyer Gbenro Gabadamosi filed an application asking the court to dismiss the charge. On April 3, Vandi’s no-case application was dismissed.
Judge Harrison ruled that the prosecution had adduced sufficient oral and written evidence implicating the accused in the crime.
