Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has urged patience with new signing Florian Wirtz, stressing that the German playmaker will need time to fully adapt to life at Anfield and the demands of the Premier League.
Wirtz, who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen in a high-profile summer move, has been tipped as one of Europe’s brightest midfield talents. However, Dalglish cautioned fans and pundits against expecting instant fireworks from the German, who has failed to spark.
In an interview with the Stick To Football podcast, Dalglish expressed his belief that Florian Wirtz needs to work in tandem with Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak in order to succeed at Liverpool.
Dalglish said, “The first thing he needs to do is what he’s doing at the moment.
“He’s great at taking the ball into the feet, he’ll open himself up and the pass has beat you but he’s still got control of it. Or he’ll take it the other way back past you to go that way and you’re going this way.”
“He can see what’s in front of him, and once he gets it…I saw Isak the other day, the second-half when he came on I think, and he’s talking to one of the boys about his movement, what he would do.”
“And the boy is sitting and listening to him and once they get on the same wavelength…By the way, that wee fella, he could open a can of soup.”
The former Reds manager also praised Arne Slot for gradually integrating Wirtz into the squad, highlighting that young players often flourish when not placed under excessive pressure.
Dalglish concluded by insisting Wirtz’s long-term potential is “undeniable,” predicting the German international will become a key figure for Liverpool once he finds his rhythm.
