Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged with making an indecent video of a child, in a case that has sent shockwaves through English football.
According to UK authorities, the 42-year-old official faces allegations under the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) framework, with prosecutors confirming that he has been charged with creating an indecent image of a minor. The charge follows an investigation by cybercrime and child protection units.
Coote, who officiated in the Premier League between 2018 and 2023, was considered one of the league’s senior referees before being removed from top-flight duties earlier this year. He has also served as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in high-profile matches, including FA Cup and Premier League fixtures.
The Football Association (FA) and Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) have yet to issue a formal response, but officials say Coote has been suspended from all football-related activities pending the outcome of legal proceedings. Legal experts stress that the charge remains an allegation at this stage, with the former referee due to appear before a magistrates’ court later this month.
The case has reignited discussions about safeguarding within professional sport, with child protection groups calling for stricter vetting and oversight of officials in positions of trust. If found guilty, Coote could face a custodial sentence as well as inclusion on the sex offenders register.
