Defection: Tinubu’s Aide, Onanuga Slams Opposition, Defends APC’s Growing Ranks

In a robust defense of the current administration, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, addressed recent claims from opposition figures regarding the defection of key political players to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The remarks come in the wake of significant political shifts, including President Tinubu’s endorsement by Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s defection, and former vice-presidential candidate Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s resignation.

Onanuga, posting on X, stated: “We have read the alarming claims of disgruntled opposition figures, some partisan human rights crusaders, and emergency defenders of democracy over recent defections.” He emphasized that these changes have left the opposition in disarray, noting: “The seismic shift… certainly threw the opposition and their sympathisers into disarray.”

The adviser dismissed allegations that the Tinubu administration is steering Nigeria towards a one-party state, asserting: “Contrary to the false claims in the propaganda materials… democracy is not under any threat in Nigeria.” He further criticized the opposition for their inability to manage their affairs, stating: “The opposition cannot blame President Tinubu and the governing APC for their poor organisation, indiscipline, and gross incompetence.”

Onanuga also highlighted the hypocrisy of those who criticize the ruling party while celebrating defections that align with their interests. “It is hypocrisy writ large when opposition politicians… desire that the party of the President should implode so they can gain electoral advantage,” he remarked.

Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to democracy, he stated: “Under President Tinubu, democracy is strong, and the multiparty democratic system will continue to flourish unhindered.” He urged Nigerians to respect the political choices of their fellow citizens, asserting: “It is a gross disservice to democracy… to delegitimise the political choices of some Nigerians.”

Onanuga concluded by calling for unity in protecting Nigeria’s democratic values, encouraging all citizens to “join hands with the administration in protecting our democracy by respecting our people’s choices.” As the political landscape continues to evolve, the Tinubu administration remains steadfast in its belief that democracy in Nigeria is not only intact but thriving.
