A special ceremony marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day will see President Bola Tinubu presenting National Honours to selected lawmakers on June 12, according to an official announcement.

House Spokesperson, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., released details of the upcoming event in a statement issued Sunday from Abuja, outlining planned activities for the milestone celebration of Nigeria’s democracy.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the leadership and members of the National Assembly will convene for an extraordinary Joint Sitting on Thursday, June 12. This special parliamentary session will serve as the centerpiece of the Democracy Day observance.

President Tinubu will attend as the distinguished Guest of Honour and is expected to deliver remarks to the assembled legislators during the joint session.

“The programme will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of National Honours on select legislators by Mr. President,” Rotimi Jr. stated.

The House Spokesperson also revealed the chosen theme for this year’s Democracy Day celebration:
“26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”

Rotimi Jr. described the Joint Sitting as a significant event in Nigeria’s ongoing democratic journey, emphasizing the National Assembly’s enduring role in safeguarding democratic values, ensuring government accountability, and fostering national development throughout more than two decades of uninterrupted civilian rule.

He urged citizens across the country to approach Democracy Day with a spirit of reflection and renewed dedication to the nation’s future. Rotimi Jr. called on Nigerians to view the annual observance as an opportunity for deeper patriotic commitment and united efforts toward building a more equitable, prosperous, and cohesive nation.
