A new report highlights a shift in the cryptocurrency exchange landscape, as major players like Binance and Crypto.com lose ground to smaller rivals and decentralized exchanges (DEXs) gain momentum.
Binance, the largest crypto exchange globally, saw a significant year-over-year decline in its market share, with its spot trading dropping from 52.5% in October 2023 to 39.5% by October 2024.
Similarly, its share in crypto derivatives trading decreased from 50.9% to 42.5% during the same period.
This decline has opened the door for competitors like Bybit, OKX, and Bitget to expand their foothold.
Bybit, for example, jumped from seventh place in 2023 to become the second-largest exchange, doubling its market share to 8.51%. OKX, now the third-largest exchange, also saw a slight increase in its market share.
Bitget has seen notable success, growing from 8.2% to 12.7% over the past year.
Bitget’s CEO, Gracy Chen, attributed this growth to a focus on educational initiatives and strategic partnerships with high-profile figures like Lionel Messi, which helped build trust and attract new users.
While centralized exchanges (CEXs) like Binance and Crypto.com continue to dominate the market, decentralized exchanges are gaining traction.
DEX trading volumes surpassed the $250 billion mark in March and June 2024, marking a significant rise since late 2021.
DEXs now account for 13.6% of spot trading volume compared to CEXs, signalling a growing shift toward decentralized platforms.
Despite the challenges, Binance remains a dominant force in the crypto industry, processing over $22.5 trillion in trading volume last year.
