Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has made history by climbing to 8th position in the latest FIBA Women’s World Rankings.
This impressive jump of three places from their previous ranking is a testament to their dominance in African women’s basketball.
With 640.1 points, they’ve surpassed basketball powerhouses like Spain, Brazil, and Japan, solidifying their position as the highest-ranked African team.
The team, now ranked 8th in the world with 640.1 points, won their fifth consecutive title, defeating Mali 78–64 in the 2025 AfroBasket final.
The team qualified for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup and is the only African team to have ever broken into the global top 10.
Other notable African teams in the rankings include: Mali – 18th in the world, after finishing as AfroBasket runners-up; Senegal – 25th in the world; Mozambique – 32nd in the world; Cameroon – 35th in the world; Egypt – 43rd in the world; and South Sudan – 55th in the world, after a historic bronze medal finish at AfroBasket 2025.
The top five teams in the world rankings are: USA – 1st in the world, with 880.9 points; Australia – 2nd in the world, with 719.6 points; France – 3rd in the world, with 719.2 points; China – 4th in the world, with 712.7 points; and Belgium – 5th in the world, with 702.1 points.
