Nigeria’s female basketball team nicknamed the D’Tigress secured an encouraging victory against their opponents Australia at the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics Games.
D’Tigress overcame Australia 75-62 in a thrilling Olympics match on Monday morning, giving Team Nigeria its first win at this year’s Games in Paris.
Under coach Rena Wakama’s tutelage, the Nigerian team put on a tremendous performance to defeat the Australians at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium.
Nigeria closed the first half with a surprising 11-0 run, giving them a 13-point advantage heading into the locker rooms.
That was enough for them to reach the finish line, and with four minutes remaining in the final session, the Opals managed to make it a one-shot game.
But Amy Okonkwo’s stunning triple eased Nigerian anxieties and rekindled their enthusiasm.
Nigeria scored a stunning 26 points off turnovers in the encounter, thanks to Australia dropping the ball an astonishing 26 times.
After the team secured victory against the Australians, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh expressed pride and excitement at the feat.
