Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra Leone, has assumed the role of Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), succeeding Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu, who concluded a one-year term of leadership.
The transition occurred during an ECOWAS Summit held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where heads of state from across the region gathered to review the bloc’s achievements and set future collaborative frameworks.
During Tinubu’s tenure, ECOWAS focused significantly on fostering economic integration, addressing regional security challenges, and promoting democratic governance in member states facing military interventions.
Before the official announcement, initial reports suggested that Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, might be appointed Chairman, following discussions in a closed-door session before the main proceedings.
In his inaugural address as Chairman, Bio outlined key priorities for his leadership: restoring constitutional order, deepening democratic governance, revitalizing regional security cooperation, advancing economic integration, and strengthening institutional credibility.
Tinubu originally assumed the ECOWAS chairmanship on July 9, 2023, in Guinea-Bissau and was re-elected for a second term one year later in Abuja. His continued leadership had been endorsed by regional leaders to sustain progress in security, reconciliation, and development initiatives.
