The Etsako Youth Movement (EYM) has strongly criticized recent statements by the ousted Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, regarding his purported intention to expose Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The youth group has described Shaibu’s comments as “laughable” and asserted that if anyone is to be exposed, it is Shaibu himself, citing his alleged incompetence, disloyalty, and repeated attempts to undermine his former boss.
In a statement released on Thursday, Johnson Umoru, the leader of the EYM, lambasted Shaibu for what he termed “desperate and baseless” claims aimed at tarnishing the image of Governor Obaseki.
According to Umoru, Shaibu’s history in office is marred by numerous instances of betrayal and misconduct, which have severely damaged his credibility.
“It is laughable that Philip Shaibu, a man who has consistently shown his incompetence and disloyalty, would now claim he has something to expose about Governor Obaseki,” Umoru stated.
“If there is anyone who needs to be exposed, it is Shaibu. His actions have demonstrated a clear lack of loyalty and a dangerous ambition to usurp the powers of his former boss,” he added.
He called for a thorough investigation into Shaibu’s financial dealings, particularly concerning the funds used to pursue his failed governorship ambition and his numerous court cases.
“We demand a probe into how Philip Shaibu obtained the funds to finance his ill-fated governorship campaign.
“The people of Edo State deserve to know the source of these funds, especially given his track record of questionable behaviour,” he said.
The Etsako Youth Movement also highlighted Shaibu’s alleged proclivity for violence, drawing attention to a recent incident on Airport Road in Benin City, where a police inspector tragically lost his life.
“Shaibu has shown a knack for violence, and this was evident in the recent Airport Road incident where a police officer was killed. This is unacceptable, and we call for his immediate arrest and prosecution for this and other acts of violence he has been associated with,” Umoru declared.
The call for Shaibu’s prosecution has resonated within Edo State, with many citizens expressing concern over his actions while in office.
“Philip Shaibu’s tenure as Deputy Governor was marked by missteps, from his unyielding quest for power to his involvement in violent incidents. It is time for the law to take its course,” said an anonymous political analyst in Benin City.
Umoru concluded by urging the people of Edo State to remain vigilant and to support efforts to hold public officials accountable for their actions.
“The Etsako Youth Movement stands firmly against corruption, violence, and betrayal. We will continue to advocate for justice and ensure that those who have wronged the people are brought to account,” he said.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on Philip Shaibu, who now faces increasing scrutiny and pressure from various quarters.
Meanwhile, the Esan Professionals For Progress has petitioned the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, urging him to declare the seat of Senator Monday Okpebholo vacant due to his prolonged absence from the Senate and his constituency.
The group, led by Kingsley Akhigbe, highlighted that Senator Okpebholo, who represents Edo Central Senatorial District, has been absent for over five months.
Okpebholo is the current All Progressives Congress candidate in the forthcoming Edo election.
