The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo is facing a critical financial crisis as the governorship election in the state looms.
According to reports, the shortage of funds has severely impacted the party’s campaign efforts, with key chieftains reportedly abandoning support for the APC party’s governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
Sources within the APC campaign council reveal that the party is struggling to secure adequate financial backing, a situation exacerbated by discontent among state leaders.
Accordingly, many prominent APC figures have declined to contribute to the campaign fund, citing dissatisfaction with Okpebholo’s candidacy.
”The controversy surrounding Okpebholo’s nomination has significantly contributed to this financial shortfall.
”The candidate, who was imposed on the party, is viewed by many as an unfit choice for the governorship position. This sentiment has led to widespread reluctance among party leaders to invest in his campaign,” a source told journalists in the state.
Senator Matthew Urohoghide, the Director-General of the APC campaign council in Edo State, has expressed his frustration with the current situation.
He stated that the severe impact of the situation has caused funding shortages on the campaign’s ability to operate effectively.
His words: “We are facing an uphill battle with the current lack of financial support. The failure of party leaders to contribute has severely hampered our ability to mobilize and engage voters.
“The campaign is struggling, and this is deeply concerning as we approach the election.”
Political watchers say the crisis within the APC is indicative of deeper issues related to party unity and candidate selection.
”The imposition of Okpebholo has created friction among party members, many of whom feel that the candidate’s leadership capabilities are insufficient for the role.
”As the election date approaches, the APC faces the challenge of overcoming these internal divisions and securing the necessary resources to mount a successful campaign.
”The party’s ability to address these issues will be crucial in determining its prospects in the upcoming governorship election,” political analyst, Efosa Abumere stated.
Meanwhile, residents and political observers have expressed concerns about the communication challenges of Okpebholo.
Despite his high-profile candidacy, Senator Okpebholo has avoided engaging with the media and has been notably absent from public forums where he could address voter concerns directly.
The deliberate media silence has fueled speculation and unease among residents who are questioning his readiness to lead.
