Mexican boxing superstar Canelo Álvarez faces uncertainty over his highly anticipated 2026 comeback following new reports that his elbow recovery is taking longer than expected.
According to sources close to the fighter’s camp, the multiple-weight world champion is still struggling with discomfort in his right elbow—the same arm that underwent surgery after his last title defence earlier this year.
Canelo, who has dominated the boxing scene for over a decade, was initially expected to make his ring return in the first half of 2026, but insiders now say his recovery timeline could push that date further back.
“Canelo is progressing, but not as fast as we’d hoped,” a source told ESPN Deportes. “He’s taking a cautious approach this time — no rush, no risks.”
The 34-year-old last fought in May 2025, defending his undisputed super middleweight titles in Las Vegas before announcing he would undergo a minor procedure to address recurring elbow pain.
This latest development has cast doubt on potential mega-fights against David Benavidez or a long-rumoured rematch with Dmitry Bivol, both of which fans have eagerly awaited.
Canelo’s team insists the Mexican icon is focused on a full recovery, prioritising longevity over quick returns.
“He wants to come back 100%—not 80%,” the insider added. “When he’s ready, he’ll fight anyone.”
