X is releasing a contentious upgrade to the block feature, allowing anyone to see your public postings even if you have blocked them.
In a post on X yesterday (3 November), the platform formerly known as Twitter stated that it has begun rolling out an upgrade in which even if you block an account, that account will be able to see your public tweets.
People have protested this adjustment, claiming that they do not want blocked persons to read their posts for reasons of safety.
Newsng learnt that the change allows blocked users to view postings from the accounts that blocked them, but they cannot interact with those accounts.
X earlier stated that it was making the change since users may already view and interact with blocked accounts by switching to a non-blocked account.
X also stated that previously established blocking might be used to communicate and hide dangerous or sensitive information about individuals banned, so the new feature provides “greater transparency.”
Although the restricted user is unable to connect with them, many people are concerned about the update’s potential consequences.
Users have pointed out that X’s blocking adjustments may violate restrictions on the iOS and Google Play app stores.
Apple, for example, stipulates in its developer terms of service that any app featuring user-generated content must include “the ability to block abusive users from the service.”
The block button remains theoretically in place, so it’s unclear what Apple and Google will do.
In October, X’s engineering account said that people who block others may say negative things about the banned person who is unaware of it and that the update allows for “greater transparency.”
The modification will still prevent blocked users from following, liking, commenting, reposting, DMing, or engaging with the blocking party’s postings.
