Elon Musk’s AI firm, xAI, which provides the Grok chatbot that is incorporated into X (previously Twitter), began exposing an API this week.
According to TechCrunch, the xAI API offers only one model, “grok-beta,” which costs $5 per million input tokens (~750,000 words) or $15 per million output tokens.
Tokens are subsets of raw data, such as the syllables “fan,” “tas,” and “tic” in the word “fantastic.”
Newsng understands that xAI API allows for function calls, which connect Grok models to other tools like databases and search engines.
And, while they don’t appear to be live yet, the documentation suggests vision models that can analyse both text and images.
Musk founded xAI last year. Soon after, the business, which had recently moved into OpenAI’s old headquarters, made its first Grok model available to X Premium+ subscribers for $16 per month.
The only model that is now for sale, according to TechCrunch, is called “grok-beta,” which clearly makes it unclear whether or not it is the most recent model, Grok-2.
Models for text and picture analysis might also exist, but they aren’t operational yet.
In the generative AI competition, xAI is vying with serious opponents such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
Grok has grown further integrated into the X experience. Grok can generate graphics on X (without guardrails, which is contentious).
It summarises news and trending events (sometimes incorrectly), and it may eventually improve X’s search capabilities, account profiles, post analytics, and reply functionalities.
