You may now create large-scale community chats on Messenger with users you have no connection to through Meta.
According to a report from TechCrunch, the goal of the feature is to facilitate more structured and organised communication between organisations, educational institutions, and other private groups.
The company debuted community chats for Facebook Groups back in 2022, allowing members of the same groups to easily communicate in real-time.
This community function, unlike the previous one, isn’t restricted to social network groups; instead, it allows users of Discord or Messenger to establish connections with up to 5,000 random users.
Within the Messenger app, all community chats will be consolidated into a single location, each with a “Home” area where administrators can publish announcements and updates.
Newsng understands that though this feature functions similarly to one of the same found in WhatsApp, the main distinction is that Messenger Communities are linked to Facebook’s social graph; individuals can be invited to a Community simply by submitting their Facebook profile, as opposed to WhatsApp, which requires a phone number.
The feature’s Help page on Meta states that it’s “not available to everyone or on all platforms at this time.” If you see the option to create a new community in the left menu of your mobile Messenger app, you’ll know you’re a part of this deployment.
According to the source, Messenger’s introduction suggests that Meta wants to add more features and set itself apart from other messaging apps like iMessage.
It implies that by enabling users to locate and engage with their community within Messenger, it hopes to provide a more extensive social networking feature to the messaging program that isn’t associated with Facebook.
We earlier reported that Meta has announced plans to introduce a new feature on its Instagram and Facebook apps in June 2024 to enable Nigerian content producers to monetize their work and make a living on the network.
