The Federal Government has indicated its support for the decision of the Lagos State Government to ban Styrofoam and other single-use plastics.
The Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, stated that the ban on certain plastic materials is inevitable, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing the menace of single-use plastics.
Salako commended the Lagos State Government for its bold decision to implement the ban, adding that it will address the environmental challenges posed by single-use plastics.
He said the Federal Ministry of Environment has inaugurated an interagency committee to facilitate consultations with various stakeholders, including government agencies and businesses, to develop sustainable solutions.
The minister noted that the ministry is examining policies and initiatives to drive the production of alternatives to plastics.
He highlighted the country’s poorly regulated and indiscriminate use of plastics, emphasizing the necessity of addressing this issue.
Salako urged Nigerians to prepare for changes in the use of plastics, including the potential banning of certain products.
”The government plans to roll out awareness campaigns and sensitization programs to prepare the public for the upcoming measures and promote holistic waste management.
”It aligns with global efforts to reduce the environmental impact of single-use plastics and promote eco-friendly alternatives,” he stated.
