The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, with plans to enhance forestry education through investment in research and academic programs.
At the 85th Anniversary of the Federal College of Forestry in Ibadan, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, announced the government’s plan to elevate the Federal Colleges of Forestry in Ibadan and Jos to degree-awarding institutions.
The move is part of a broader strategy to support forestry education and foster research initiatives aimed at environmental preservation.
During the event, which also served as a fundraiser for a new multipurpose hall, Lawal commended the college’s efforts in training experts who contribute to policy-making and environmental conservation nationwide.
He urged the college’s leadership to intensify efforts in combating deforestation, addressing climate change, and promoting sustainable forestry practices, asserting that the future of Nigeria’s environment depends on these crucial actions.
Highlighting the government’s dedication to environmental initiatives, Lawal stated, “We are investing in programs that support forestry education and research.
“Together, we can develop policies that promote sustainable practices while ensuring the livelihoods of communities reliant on forestry.”
Additionally, Senator Yunus Akintunde, representing Oyo Central and Chair of the Senate Committee on Environment, addressed the need for Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) support for mono-technic institutions like the Federal College of Forestry.
Responding to a plea from Dr. Ibraheem Lawal, the college’s Provost, Akintunde assured attendees that he would advocate for their inclusion in TETFUND benefits.
He encouraged the college to also explore internal revenue generation, emphasizing collaborative support from the government and stakeholders to achieve their objectives.
Officials say the focus on bolstering forestry education and environmental stewardship reflects Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to balance development with ecological responsibility, as the government works alongside educational institutions to foster a more sustainable future.
Meanwhile, in the wake of the devastating flood that struck Borno State, Lawal paid a condolence and sympathy visit to Borno recently.
The visit aimed to assess the impact of the disaster and initiate a coordinated response to mitigate the adverse environmental effects caused by the flood.
During the visit, the Minister of Environment expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the destruction of properties caused by the flood.
