The Federal Government has announced plans to restructure the 115 Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) across Nigeria by dividing them into basic and secondary schools.
The initiative, aimed at enhancing the educational system, was revealed by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, during the Annual General Meeting of Principals of Unity Colleges held in Abuja.
He said the move aligns with the National Policy on Education (NPE) and is expected to improve infrastructure, boost teachers’ welfare, create employment opportunities, and increase funding for the schools.
Dr. Sununu also emphasized the importance of entrepreneurship education as a tool for fostering self-reliance among students and addressing unemployment issues in Nigeria.
He urged the principals of the colleges to collaborate in curbing social vices, maintaining infrastructure, and ensuring good relations with host communities for overall growth and security.
Dr. Idowu Akinbamijo, Chairperson of the Principals of Unity Schools, noted that the meeting’s objective was to plan the agenda for the upcoming year and strengthen the capacity of principals to face future challenges.
