Nigeria’s hopes for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Lesotho and the Benin Republic have suffered a blow after Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu was ruled out for several months with a syndesmosis ligament injury.
The 24-year-old sustained the setback during Bremen’s Bundesliga fixture over the weekend and was immediately substituted after signalling discomfort in his ankle. Subsequent scans confirmed the extent of the injury, forcing the club to announce that Agu will be sidelined “for a significant period.”
Agu’s absence is a major setback for both club and country. The versatile full-back had been tipped to earn a call-up to the Super Eagles following his strong start to the season. His pace, overlapping runs, and defensive awareness had caught the attention of Nigeria’s head coach, Finidi George, who was considering him as part of the team’s evolving defensive setup.
In a brief statement, Werder Bremen expressed disappointment at losing the player at a crucial point in the season but wished him a swift recovery. “Felix has been in excellent form, and losing him for several months is unfortunate. We’ll support him through his rehabilitation process,” the club said.
The injury means Agu will miss Nigeria’s opening World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho in Uyo and Benin Republic away fixtures, seen as vital to the Super Eagles’ campaign to return to the global stage after missing the 2022 edition in Qatar.
With Agu unavailable, Super Eagles coach Finidi George may turn to familiar options such as Bruno Onyemaechi or Zaidu Sanusi to fill the left-back role as Nigeria aims to begin their qualification journey on a winning note.
