Federal government officials led by the minister of labour and productivity, Simon Lalong, alongside the junior minister in the ministry, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyeajeocha, on Monday, engaged in a pivotal meeting with members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The meeting was led by NLC President Joe Ajaero and aimed to address pressing issues raised by the labour congress, including the looming threat of a complete strike.

Lalong, in his opening statement, emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the legitimate concerns raised by labour.

He indicated that these concerns were under careful consideration, focusing on categorizing them into three groups: those that could be promptly resolved, those requiring more time, and those needing further deliberation.

Acknowledging the nation’s economic challenges, Lalong stressed the importance of striking a balance between addressing workforce concerns and fostering economic growth for sustainable national progress.

He called for open-minded and constructive dialogue to bridge gaps between worker interests and the shared goal of advancing the economy.

He expressed confidence that the meeting would lead to resolutions that drive progress in the labour sector and establish a harmonious partnership between the government and the NLC, conducive to the prosperity of the Nigerian workforce.

On his part, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero conveyed the frustration of labour leaders, highlighting unaddressed demands and the hardships faced by workers due to subsidy removal without corresponding palliatives or wage reviews.

He also raised concerns about impostors attempting to take over the National Union Of Road Transport Workers illegally, leading to the closure of its headquarters and the arrest of its members, demanding their immediate release.

The meeting ended with a closed-door session to work on resolving issues and fostering a more collaborative and productive relationship between the government and labour.
