Tata Electronics announced on Thursday that it will resume partial operations at its fire-damaged plant in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, which produces Apple iPhone components.
On Saturday (September 29, 2024), a large fire destroyed the facility. The production was halted indefinitely when a fire broke out in an area where chemicals are stored for the business that manufactures iPhone back panels and other components.
Ten individuals were injured, and the corporation immediately ceased production, according to reports.
Approximately 1,500 people were inside the facility at the time of the event, which occurred during the morning shift. Officials confirmed that all workers had been safely evacuated.
Videos emerged showing massive clouds of smoke rising from the location.
Following the incident, some employees developed respiratory concerns and were transported to a private hospital.
Approximately ten to twelve fire vehicles were dispatched to fight the incident, which took many hours to contain. High-ranking authorities, including MLAs and senior government officials, were spotted assessing the situation.
“We plan to restart work in many areas of the facility today. And as we work toward resuming full operations, all our team members will continue to receive full pay,” a company spokesperson said.
While the origin of the incident is still being investigated, district fire officials have stated that the worth of the damages will be determined once the debris is cleared.
The fire caused one of the plant’s units to collapse, and recovery efforts are now focused on determining the extent of the damage and resuming operations as soon as feasible.
