Conor McGregor has confirmed that he will not be pursuing a run for the presidency of Ireland, ending weeks of speculation that the former UFC champion was seriously considering entering politics.
The 37-year-old mixed martial arts icon had fueled headlines earlier this year when he hinted at the possibility of throwing his hat into the political ring.
His outspoken nature, vast popularity, and business ventures outside the octagon sparked debate over whether McGregor could mount a realistic campaign for Áras an Uachtaráin, Ireland’s highest office.
Ireland’s “fixed” democracy, according to the mixed martial arts star, only permits “establishment-approved candidates” in the country to appear on the ballot.
McGregor dismissed the idea, describing it as something he no longer wished to pursue. “I gave it thought, but it’s not for me,” he said. “My focus remains on my family, my businesses, and giving back in other ways. I’ll leave politics to the politicians.”
