Google’s recently launched artificial intelligence (AI) search function has come under fire for giving inconsistent, erroneous results as well as possibly harmful suggestions.
There are now serious doubts regarding the accuracy and security of the data that Google’s search engine provides due to the AI-generated results.
An AI-generated search results overview tool was revealed by Google earlier this month.
It summarises search results so users don’t have to browse through numerous links to get the answers to their questions quickly. However, this week the function came under fire for answering some users’ questions with inaccurate or misleading information.
Kylie Robison, a senior AI reporter working with The Verge’s policy and tech teams, reported that Google’s new AI Overviews feature told a user to apply glue on Pizza.
“Add some glue,” Google answers. “Mix about 1/8 cup of Elmer’s glue in with the sauce. Non-toxic glue will work,” was the response to a query on the Pizza problem.
For instance, several individuals stated on X that, contrary to popular belief, Google’s AI summary claimed that former President Barack Obama is a Muslim. Obama is actually a Christian.
A Google AI summary, shared by another user, said that “none of Africa’s 54 recognised countries starts with the letter ‘K,'” obviously excluding Kenya.
