Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has expressed optimism for Nigeria’s future, urging citizens to give thanks for the nation’s 64 years of independence from colonial rule.
The governor made this known during his address at the Independence Day Anniversary Church Service at Maria Assumpta Cathedral in Owerri,
He emphasized that despite challenges, Nigeria’s story is one of hope and faith in God.
Uzodimma highlighted three reasons for gratitude: the progress made over the years, the gift of life allowing Nigerians to coexist as brothers and sisters, and the relative peace that persists across the nation.
“Despite the challenges we face, Nigeria has not been confronted with full-blown war,” he noted.
The governor called for collective prayers for the country and its leaders, encouraging citizens to shift from “lamentation to celebration and from dismay to hope.”
He praised the Church for its role in fostering unity and peace, urging leaders to continue praying for Nigeria and Imo State.
Addressing issues of national concern, Uzodimma condemned the destruction of government property and violence against security agents, stating, “Patriotism and nationhood abhor all that.”
He also promised to address the payment of gratuities for pensioners, asking for prayers for those involved in fraudulent activities that hinder the verification process.
Archbishop Most Revd. Dr. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, who delivered a message during the service, affirmed God’s presence with Nigerians, reinforcing that the nation’s unity is a testament to divine guidance.
He commended the governor for efforts in maintaining peace, tackling insecurity, and promoting infrastructural development, including job creation through waste management initiatives.
The Independence Anniversary Service saw attendance from notable dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, and various members of the state and national assembly.
The atmosphere was filled with a sense of hope as Governor Uzodimma reminded all that “with unity and faith, the country will reach her destination.”
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended religious institutions in Nigeria for their significant contributions to peace and tolerance across the country.
Speaking at the Opening Workshop of the African Lutheran Church Leadership Consultation in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), emphasized the importance of collaboration between religious bodies and the government in fostering national development.
In his address, Tinubu acknowledged the church’s efforts in maintaining tranquillity amid the numerous challenges Nigeria faces.
