Graham Potter, the former manager of Chelsea and Brighton, has been formally announced as the next head coach of the Swedish national team, in a shocking development that is expected to upend European football.
The Swedish Football Association announced the appointment on Monday morning, describing Potter as “a modern, visionary coach capable of reigniting Swedish football’s identity and pride.”
Potter, 50, has been out of management since leaving Chelsea in 2023, and his return marks a bold move both for him and for Sweden, who are looking to rebuild after failing to qualify for Euro 2024.
According to reports, the English tactician signed a three-year deal that runs through the 2028 European Championship qualifiers, with a clear mandate: to restore Sweden’s attacking spark and to bring through the next generation of stars.
Speaking during his unveiling in Stockholm, Potter said, “Sweden has a rich football culture and incredible potential. I’m here to help this team rediscover its rhythm and confidence. It’s a proud moment for me.”
The appointment comes after Janne Andersson’s resignation earlier this year following a disappointing qualification campaign.
Football insiders believe Potter’s tactical flexibility and calm, analytical approach could transform the Blågult’s fortunes. His reputation for developing young talent—seen during his time at Östersunds FK in Sweden’s top flight—also makes him a fan favourite.
Swedish FA president Fredrik Reinfeldt hailed the move as a new chapter: “Graham understands Swedish football inside out. We believe his experience and philosophy align perfectly with our ambitions.”
