The Civil Society Groups for Good Governance (CSGGG) have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure the most senior director in the Ministry of Finance can occupy the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) office.
The demand was made in an open letter to the president a few days before the current AGF’s tenure expires.
In making the demands from the president, the CSGGG also listed the qualities the new AGF must possess to ensure Nigeria benefits from his or her appointment.
The qualities include:
1). A Nigerian with a proven track record in revenue generation, expertise in financial administration and management
2). An accountant with vast experience in people management can rescue us from impending doom
3). Someone who can diplomatically facilitate a healthy synergy with the three arms of government
4). An accountant who can catalyze robust and cost-effective interagency cooperation to lower the cost of governance
5). An AGF who is ready to work harmoniously and seamlessly with his or her principal – the Honorable Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning – for the smooth implementation of the government’s financial implementation framework 2022 – 2025, viz-a-viz the fiscal and monetary policies of the government
6). The preferred candidate must be able to account for all international funds accruable to the country, inclusive of aid, credits, grants, and loans from international agencies
7). The next AGF must be dynamic and versatile in both private and public sector financial management and must be diplomatic and skilful in interpersonal relationships to enable him or her to proactively navigate and outmanoeuvre the entrenched bureaucracy and corruption plaguing our public service in general and the AGF office in particular.
