Several high-profile cryptocurrency projects have been hit by coordinated hacks targeting their Discord channels. Between August 24th and 30th, platforms such as Witness Chain, Polygon, Avalanche, ZkSync, and Orderly Network suffered breaches that exploited vulnerabilities through phishing schemes.
Witness Chain, known for its blockchain-based DePIN validation, fell victim to the attacks on August 30th.
Hackers used deceptive links to compromise the channel, prompting Pankaj Agarwal, a core contributor, to warn users against interacting with suspicious recovery processes via his X account.
The first sign of trouble appeared on August 24th when Polygon’s Discord channel was breached.
The platform’s Chief Security Officer, Mehta Gupta, quickly advised members to avoid clicking on any links. Unfortunately, one user lost $150,000 due to the scam.
The cyberattacks continued at a rapid pace. Within 48 hours of the Polygon breach, Avalanche and zkSync Discord channels were also compromised, with similar phishing tactics used.
Avalanche users reported disabled chats and misleading announcements about claiming tokens, while zkSync faced a comparable breach.
Despite these challenges, the affected platforms have taken swift action. They have regained control of their channels and are enhancing their security measures to combat future threats.
