The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa has expressed deep concern over the recent building collapse in Noman’s Land Quarters, Kano, and has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the tragic incident.

The collapse of the two-storey building in Fagge Local Government Area trapped multiple people, with a report from the National Emergency Management Agency confirming two fatalities and two others injured and hospitalized.

Dangiwa directed officials to expedite the investigation, promising decisive government action based on the findings.

He lamented the recurring issue of building collapses in Nigeria and emphasized the urgent need for an overhaul of the construction system, including strict adherence to building codes and regulations.

Describing the incident as a “sad development” that highlights long-standing issues in the building industry, Dangiwa warned that if the situation remains unchecked, it could have catastrophic consequences for the sector and society.

He also pointed to the recent school building collapse in Jos, reiterating the government’s commitment to addressing these failures and holding responsible parties accountable.

“I have received the report of the Jos collapse investigation, and we are compiling a checklist of all professionals involved in the construction. Action will be taken,” he assured.

Dangiwa urged state governments and relevant agencies to be proactive in preventing future collapses by enforcing regulations and ensuring due diligence in building permit approvals.

He also called for the use of quality materials and adherence to structural designs in all construction projects.

The Minister expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured, pledging that the government would take necessary steps to prevent further tragedies.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has partnered with the Association of Housing Corporations of Nigeria (AHCN) to advance the delivery of affordable housing under the Renewed Hope Housing Programme, a key initiative of the current administration.

The collaboration aims to eradicate homelessness and provide decent, affordable housing for all Nigerians in a safe environment.

The agreement was reached during a courtesy visit by the AHCN’s President and Chairman of the Council, Esv. Eno Obongha led a delegation to the Ministry.
