Michael Freeman, the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria and Permanent Representative of Israel to ECOWAS, has expressed Israel’s unwavering commitment to enhancing bilateral ties with Nigeria for mutual economic growth.
Freeman highlighted that economic relations between Israel and Nigeria were officially established in 1960 after Nigeria gained independence.
He said the relationship flourished until 1973 when, under the influence of the Organization of African Unity, Nigeria severed formal ties with Israel in protest against the occupation of Sinai territory.
In an interview with journalists in Abuja, the ambassador emphasised bolstering ties with Nigeria in various sectors, including the economy, agriculture, cyber, health, education, and homeland security.
He also underscored Israel’s eagerness to collaborate with Nigeria on multiple fronts, fostering a better future for both nations.
“While there is an ongoing war, Nigeria remains our friend and partner. We see 2024 as a very positive year for Israel-Nigeria relations,” Freeman stated.
He assured that measures were being implemented to resume consular services and operations, aiming to restore normalcy amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Freeman detailed plans to enhance cybersecurity, the digital economy, and overall economic cooperation between Nigeria and Israel.
He also disclosed that the embassy was preparing to commemorate the International Holocaust Day on January 27.
The ambassador expressed optimism about the return of airlines and the issuance of visas, anticipating a resumption of normal activities.
Freeman welcomed the prospect of Nigerian pilgrims visiting Israel, emphasising the Israeli people’s resilience and determination to overcome challenges.
“Israel considers Nigeria a valuable friend and partner, committed to fostering positive relations in the years to come,” he added.
