As controversy continues to trail the legality of diaspora funding for elections in Nigeria, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, says he is yet to receive any money from citizens in other countries.
Obi disclosed this while addressing some Nigerians in London.
The former Anambra state governor dismissed the allegation as mere speculation.
“Nobody has given me anything,” Obi announced. “That is speculation. What I need is not what they would give me. But what they would give Nigeria because we need them to turn around Nigeria.”
Obi said the commitment of Nigerians in the diaspora towards his campaign would help turn around the fortunes of the country.
“This is the energy, the capacity that we need to turn around Nigeria. Every country that was turned around, was done by the diaspora. Even in the Bible, Joseph who left later came back to feed his people.”
He maintained that the 2023 general election should be based on competence, character, capacity and determination to tackle Nigeria’s problems rather than religion or ethnicity.
