World No. 3 Jannik Sinner was forced to retire from the Shanghai Masters after suffering severe cramps during his third-round match on Sunday, bringing a premature end to his campaign in China.
Jannik, who has had a brilliant and resilient 2025 season, faced yet another frustrating turn at the Shanghai Masters when he played Tallon Griekspoor in the third round under difficult circumstances, and his body broke under the strain.
The Italian star, who has been in top form this season, appeared in control early on but began struggling with movement late in the second set. Despite receiving medical attention, Sinner was unable to continue, conceding the match to his opponent.
After battling intense cramps and exhaustion, the reigning champion ended his game in the worst possible way by retiring and exiting the court hobbling after falling behind 6-7, 7-5, 3-2, after more than two and a half hours.
“It’s frustrating, but my body just didn’t respond the way I wanted,” Sinner said afterwards. “I’ll recover and come back stronger.”
The development raises slight concerns about Sinner’s fitness ahead of upcoming tournaments, with the ATP Finals and Davis Cup on the horizon.
Fans gave him a warm ovation as he left the court, acknowledging both his fighting spirit and stellar recent performances on tour.
