Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has described the Palm Sunday violent attack in Gari Ya Waye community, Angwan Rukuba in Jos, Plateau State, by armed bandits as a barbaric act which exposed the collapsed nature of the country’s security situation, news.ng reports.
There are no official figures as to the number of people who died in the attack.
In a post on X on Monday monitored by this news platform, Atiku, outraged, described the incident as barbaric, lamenting that Sunday’s attack mirrors the worsening state of insecurity in the country as lawlessness continues to thrive.
He said, “I am outraged by the barbaric attack in Gari Ya Waye community, Angwan Rukuba, Jos, which claimed the lives of scores of innocent Nigerians and left many others injured.
“That this heinous assault occurred on Sunday night, March 29, 2026, is yet another damning indictment of the near-total collapse of security in our country.”
According to him, the nation is witnessing “not merely a security lapse, but a tragic descent into lawlessness where human lives are treated as expendable.”
The former presidential candidate blamed the government’s response, despite previous directives to the various security agencies, including the military, police, and the Department of State Services (DSS), to swing into action by making arrests, but none of the directives, according to Atiku, have been followed.
“Despite endless pronouncements and so-called marching orders, insecurity remains the grim, daily reality of ordinary Nigerians who continue to bear the brunt of a failing system. It is long past the time for outrage without action,” he stated.
On the way out of this age-long crisis, Atiku called for urgent and precise measures to be carried out by the security agencies to bring an end to insecurity. He extended his condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected.
“The anger across the land must now compel urgent, decisive political will to confront and crush this menace. The continued slaughter of innocent citizens cannot become our new normal.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims in this dark and painful moment.”
